For the average high schooler, sports, clubs, work, or other extracurriculars are everyday occurrences. However, speaking to a national touring Broadway actor is most certainly not. Luckily, on Tuesday, August 29, Belleville West students were invited to learn about life on Broadway from Nathan Hirst–a graduate of the Belleville West Class of 2016 and a cast member of the National Broadway tour of Aladdin.
Commonly, Broadway performers begin training in their early childhood, however that isn’t always the case as shown by performers such as Hirst.
“I knew that I wanted to be on Broadway when I was sixteen. When I was sixteen I started very late, at least for a Broadway actor. That’s when I started training,” Hirst said.
Nevertheless, Hirst doesn’t let his “late” start hold him back. He focused on building his skills with resources that Belleville and the Metro East area had to offer.
“I would say that your hard work is going to pay off and that it’s all going to be worth it,” Hirst said.
Despite continuous rehearsals and performances, Hirst is sure to make room for family while on breaks from touring.
“I have been spending time with my family and my nephew. My next nephew is about to be born tomorrow,” Hirst said.
From spending time with family, to performing on Broadway stages around America, Hirst continues to remember to stay positive.
“Knowing where I came from and my journey getting here keeps me motivated,” Hirst said.
With a journey like Hirst’s comes many lessons to be learned.
“Your personality, work ethic, and how kind you are to people has more effect on your career than you think,” Hirst said.
After years of auditions, rehearsals, and performances, Hirst continues to share his lessons and advice with the world.
“Make sure that you know the material of whatever it is you’re going to learn because even if you’re doing community theatre, the skills that you start there will carry over your professional career. If you’re taking notes and constantly asking questions, when you get into a Broadway room, they’re going to think that you’ve done this before,” Hirst said.
Throughout all the practice and hard work, it’s also important to remember to sit down, relax, and enjoy a live show every now and again.
“I will be performing December 12-17 at the Fox,” Hirst said.
