How does the administration expect the student body to follow a rule so flexible and ever-changing when it’s obvious that they do better with structure and regularity, this is a problem that plagues Belleville West students every morning of every day when faced with getting dressed.
Dress code is an ever-changing set of rules that will change with time.
“You know it’s hard to say, I think dress code, fashion in general, darts here, goes here, over here, goes back over here, goes back over there so it’s hard to say,” Assistant Principal Mr. Whipple said.
To some, it seems like fashion is a living thing that changes back and forth countlessly until a certain way of fashion changes or stops. For instance, fashion from back in 2005 is making a comeback.
“JNCO jeans were popular, which they are now back in style,” 2005 Alumnus Jon W. said. “2005 was a different time with different rules in place about the dress code, and kids got away with different things.”
Students back in 05 got away with things we could not, member of the class of 2005
“Well the dress code about tanktops your tanktop had to be wider than three fingers, and that was enforced pretty heavily, but everybody sagged their pants all the girls wore the really long low-rise jeans even though they were against dress code ”. Jessica Gompers commented.
People cut corners where they could in 2005 as they do today, but what about a stricter time in dress code rules and enforcement like before Covid? Before Covid, the dress code was a tad bit strict, as English teacher Mr. Herron remarked.
“When I went here, the dress code was almost exclusively polos and khakis, and you were limited on the color of your polos so you could only have maroon, navy blue, grey, white, and sky blue”.
That was what the dress code was like a few years ago. Covid got rid of the dress code as a way to get people back to the school in person. Since we know the dress code was a bit more relaxed, than got strict, what changed that? Well, Covid did,
“Yes, I’d say since Covid students have become more lax,” said Stelly, “I feel like not as much today, but last year kids would come in pajama pants and slippers and kinda just looked like they rolled out of bed.” The dress code enforcement is a thing that students dislike. Business teacher Mrs. Stelly said.
Who is all a part of enforcing the dress code? Well, many people,
“Dress code is enforced by different manners-people in the hallway that are monitoring students, we also have teachers in the classroom who can make referrals, Administrators you might get a referral, everybody kinda is a part of dress code enforcement” Mr. Whipple said.
The faculty works hard to make sure we follow the rules. As much as students dislike the dress code, it will always be there. However, they could always make things more strict for students.
