With the start of the 2023-2024 school year, Belleville West introduces new additions to student life both on and off campus.
From a new principal, to the addition of weekly Reach classes, students and faculty look forward to upcoming changes.
“I love the Reach program. I’m excited about the chance to connect with you as people and provide a space for us to see you in school, but also outside of education, that way our school can be a better community,” Department Chair Mr. Romoser said.
Reach classes take place every Tuesday after second hour–resulting in first, second, sixth, and seventh hours being shortened by fifteen minutes each, while third, fourth, and fifth periods retain their full fifty-five minute duration. Reach isn’t the only addition, Belleville West students and staff are growing accustomed to.
“I’ve worked 22 years as a Missouri school educator and administrator. I’ve worked at Normandy High School, Maplewood Richmond Heights High School, University City High School, and also Belleville East High School,” Principal Dr. Malcolm Hill said.
Dr. Hill has been a supporter of the many new changes happening throughout Belleville West this year. Another new change throughout District 201 is the overhaul from Tyler SIS, the old grading system, to the newly-merged Synergy.
“I find it to be very usable and more user-friendly than the old one [Tyler SIS]. There’s a learning curve for everything,” Mr. Romoser said.
While the new year brings a new principal as well as a new student portal, the Class of 2024 commemorates their senior year with the annual Senior Sunrise.
“It’s one of my favorite activities now just because I feel that it starts the year off with such a good vibe. Another thing I love is that every type of person out there. It’s so good to see so many seniors on their very first week interact in a laid back manner. The only problem that stresses me out is weather, but otherwise it’s the best starting vibe. The pancake guy–Chris Cakes–also makes it happen along with the playlist we get going out there. Our school is in the perfect spot because you have the moon going down on one side while the sun rises,” Student Council Advisor Mrs. Quandt said.
For organizers and students alike, senior sunrise continues to be a highly anticipated event.
“It was overall really fun getting to spend time with my class. Looked good, felt good,” senior Teona Mosley said.
Students and faculty can expect more changes in the near future, as this is only the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year.
